Default Abolish Rune of Vitae

Although seeming like a good idea at first, the Rune of Vitae (+10 health stacking applied to any armor piece, for those who don't know) is more of a nuisance than anything in the sense that it makes it difficult for PVE characters to easily switch their builds without having lots of different pieces of the same armor set. I will attempt to explain what I mean by this below.

[edit] This also applies to the Rune of Attunement (Energy +2) [/edit]

Although I rarely use Inspiration Magic, I have a Rune of Minor Inspiration Magic on my pants because I occasionally use Inspiration Magic as a secondary attribute. In order to remain competitive, I would have to remove that Rune whenever I was not using Inspiration Magic and replace it with a Vitae Rune, which is expensive and time consuming given the fact that I just want to switch builds. The alternative to repeatedly buying new Runes whenever I want to switch builds would be to have multiple pieces of armor, some with Runes of Vitae and some with other runes, and to switch between those. Not only does that also cost money, but it clutters my inventory. PVE players should not have to be rich to be competitive. You can argue that PVE players don't have to "compete" but some people like having the best gear available when they go into battle.

Finally, I think the introduction of Runes of Vitae ultimately punishes users that use a diverse array of skills, favoring those people who put all their attribute points in one or two categories over those that like to spread their attribute points more. I see this as giving more health and power to spike teams moreso than balanced teams.

I think when considering the Runes of Vitae one should ask what the point of their introduction is. If your answer is to prevent spike teams from forming and dominating, why not increase the maximum health of ALL players by a certain amount rather than punishing people with a larger spread of attribute points and causing annoyance to PVE players?

If you don't want to read my whole post, I will sum up all my points here.
  • They make switching builds more difficult for PVE players.
  • They punish people that use a variety of attributes in their primary class, favoring those that put all their points into two attributes.
  • There are plenty of other alternatives to health increases including Vigor Runes, Weapon Modifications, and Armor Types.

Just some food for thoughts. Questions, comments, and concerns are appreciated.

Competitive PvE?
*scratches head*

I honestly have no idea what he's talking about... I always thought that anything goes in PvE....

I'm just saying it makes switching attributes hard, and a lot of people play competitive missions or alliance battles with their PVE players and it's a pain to have to pay money every time you want to switch your build because in order to compete with the PVP players you have to swap runes you aren't using for vitae runes. The concept is not hard to grasp.

And on a sidenote, I think Domination Magic would probably be a better Rune for the pants. Or possibly Illusion Magic. Definitely staying away from Fast Casting for this one...

umm, there is an option called "create pvp character".

if you feel runes of vitae are too expensive, simply unlock them using balthazar faction, and you don't have to pay for them anymore (on your pvp characters)

you shouldn't be complaining about runes of vitae on pve characters in pvp.

I have never heard of a pve midliner ever worry about health...I think your the only one...since the game started, 1-2 sups has been the norm for pve-ers, why worry about 10 health now.

Option 1: Uninstall GW.
Option 2: Don't use Mesmer.
Option 3: Create a PvP character for PvP needs.

Seriously, think about Option 3 for a bit.

10 Health is not going to kill you in PvE. For PvP, just use a PvP character. That's what they're made for.

Obviously I'm aware that I have the ability to play as a PVP character... some people prefer to play as PVE characters. But that only is addressing my first point. You have to ask yourself... what does the introduction of these Runes accomplish? If it only makes it harder to manage characters and everyone gets them for free in PVP then why even have them in the first place?

Ah, like that... got it.

Yes, that will be a pain... the pain is shared by pvp toons though. They also need to create armorpeaces, altough it won't cost them.

I don't know exactly yet what to think of Rune of Vitae...

positivies:
- gives interesting choice between minor runes and vitae rune
- more hp possible to prepare vs spike metagames

negatives:
- Absorbtion rune got a big boot in the butt. Unless playing pve, or ganking NPC's, the chances of a warrior getting physical damage aren't that high. it's debatable if a superior absorbtion is worth it over the vitae rune.
- being competitive is harder for PvE chars that want to pvp, with more armors needed.

In general I'm happy about the Vitae rune, but only have limited feeling of its impact in GW yet.

I have to say that I made this topic before I knew about all the different types of Runes available (Runes of Vitae were the only new Runes available from the merchant at the time of posting). I am happy with the selection. Not only are there Runes of Vitae, but there are also Runes that add energy, reduce conditions, and that generally do a myriad of other things... I can't speculate because I have the feeling I haven't even begun to see the selection at this point in the game. I have to say that despite the inconvenience of switching runes around I like the customizability of the new characters. So I am changing my opinion based on the knowledge of other types of "Generic" runes other than the Rune of Vitae, which I did not know about before. Maybe in the future there will be some other option that makes it so that minor or major runes do not take up a space on the armor so it makes switching skillsets easier, but aside from that, I am happy with the new choices.

Actually Albas, you have seen everything. Go check out a priest of bathazar or look at a PvP characters rune creation screen and you will see those runes you just listed in your last post are all the ones that have been added.

If you are PvPing with a PvP it's expected that you'll need alot of money. Just get multiple armors sets (one with +energy, one with as much HP as you can [3x vitae, sup vig, 2 minors] etc etc)

If not, use a PvP character, it's a billion times quicker. Literally. One billion times.

how is it an incovience because you have more options? you know, if you dont want to sue them, then dont. I see these runes as more of a bost to put on your armor that doesnt have anything on it already. Its always better to have a little extra on you then nothing extra at all.

I have to agree with others here.

I think your reading too much into this.

The choice of whether to use a certain rune is down to the player.

If they choose to put all their gold into runes which give health, then thats their choice.

If they choose to put all their gold into a skill runes to vary their abilities, thats their choice too.

No ones being punished.

It just gives more choice about the kind of build to use.

I suspect your just annoyed because you havent got enough slots to put a rune of vigor+ a rune of Vitae in at the same time because their being used for other things.

When I use my ele for PvP, I use a sup/minor on the hat, and a minor (sometimes 2) on the armor, which leaves another 2-3 slots for other runes. If 1 is Sup Vigor, that leaves 1-2 left, which can now be Vitae x2 or Vitae and Attunement, or a combination of some of the other new ones. I think it's a great addition

I agree with the OP. I'm a heavy pvp'er myself, but....

I have a pve sin. He's worldfamous. JK. Slashing daggers = hot.

When I want the extra 4 energy or 20 hp from the runes, I should either craft new materials and buy new runes, and swap them for this specific build.

If I make a pvp character, I have to use piercing damge daggers. Gets owned by Shields Up, wich is used alot in high-end gvg nowadays....

Sooo...dilemma.
